It's 2014 and I am just now writing my first ever blog post. I guess I am finally writing a blog because it seems people for some reason want to know my opinion on things, specifically food. I am by no means a food expert, nor do I claim to be a food critic or writer. With that said let me tell you a little more about myself, and you an determine wether you will tune in for future blog-casts. At this point in my life I am a 25 year old culinary student with plans on graduating in June of this year. When people hear that I am in baking and pastry they almost immediately ask what my favorite food or dessert is. To that I have no answer as I have grown to love all food. . . Even shell fish, tho the so called "doctors" say I'm alergic. Of course I do have preferences which I feel I need to put out there to cover any bias I have when I blog. Growing up I was extremely picky. Basically if my amazing and beautiful mother did not cook it I refused to touch it. And of course none of my food could touch. If it was green it was gross. If it smelled different it was gross. If I never had it before I didn't like it. If my mom didn't like it, I didn't like it. If it was leftovers I didn't like it. Because I was so difficult I would often not want to eat what was prepared for dinner. And like most parents in this situation I was told "if you don't want to eat it, cook for yourself" so that's what I started doing. I can remember the Shake and Bake commercial when I was a growing up. It's Shake and Bake, and I helped! I loved doing my best hillbilly accent and helping my mom. From those times as a young boy helping my mom began to bloom a love for cooking. My skills formed through the typical progression of cooking with my mom and slowly moving on to cooking by myself... Things like eggs, grilled cheese, Mac and cheese... The easy food staples of a growing boy. The other thing my mom got me into was baking. Growing up I loved to draw. My father is fairly artistic and it was growing clear that I had inherited this trait. My mom would often bake cakes for family, friends and school events. When it came to decorating them she always had my dad or me draw the design on for her and she would decorate it. As I grew older I moved from drawing them on to helping decorate. And as I grew up the Food Network was starting to blow up. It became common for my mom and me to sit down and watch shows like Emeril Live and Ace of Cakes (my all time favorite cake show/cake decorator). These shows began to inspire me, but I was still very picky. I graduated high school slightly less picky, still extremely particular. I immediately wanted to pursue a culinary career but I knew I would have to taste everything I made and I would most likely not like it, also I wanted to play sports and most culinary schools lack athletic programs. I bounced around from school to school, major to major, and city to city. At one point I ended up far from home, living in Houston, Tx. Broke and living in and extremely different culture, I really had to start trying new foods to get by. As it turned out, I had been depriving myself of so many amazing experiences by being picky. Even tho I am less picky now, I still am partial to my all time 'flavor'ites. Given the chance I will order hot wings, a bacon cheeseburger, pepperoni and bacon on my pizza, and iced cake donuts. Now that you know a little about the development of my passion and my pallet you might better understand the foods I like. And also the beer and whiskey that I like, because those will be in these blogs too. If anybody out there has any food, restaurant, drink or really anything in the Pittsburgh area (I frequent South Side) they would like to know more about or think I should check out just leave me a comment or shoot me an email. Thanks and enjoy.
